Maine Cannabis Guide

New here? Start with this.

No jargon, no hype — just enough to walk into a Maine shop and ask good questions.

Formats, plainly

Flower (buds you grind & smoke), pre-rolls (ready-made joints), edibles (food/drinks), and concentrates (rosin, hash, vapes). Start with flower or a low-dose edible.

Reading a label

THC % is potency, not quality. Look at terpenes (aroma/effect), the harvest/press date, and the lab panel for contaminants — not just the biggest number.

Sungrown vs. indoor

Maine's craft scene prizes living-soil sungrown for terpene character; indoor is often flashier-looking. Neither is automatically better — ask the shop.

Buying legally

Adults 21+ can buy at adult-use stores with a valid ID. Have a medical card from an approved state? See the Medical page for reciprocity.

Dosing: start low, go slow

With edibles, 2.5–5 mg of THC is a sensible first dose, and effects can take up to two hours. You can always take more later — you can't take less. With flower, one small inhale and a wait beats five big ones. When in doubt, ask a budtender; that's the job.

First-visit checklist

  • Bring a valid 21+ ID (cash helps — many shops are cash/debit).
  • Tell the budtender it's your first time and what you want to feel.
  • Don't consume in public, in a vehicle, or anywhere it's prohibited.
  • Never take it across the border — here's why.
